Today, we’re excited to welcome Emily Bohan to the Rocky Mountain Flex family! Emily is a Physical Therapist in Denver specializing in pelvic floor therapy. Starting in April, she’ll be seeing clients Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the gym from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Pelvic floor therapy can be a game-changer for anyone dealing with core instability, lower back pain, or issues related to mobility. It’s also a great addition for anyone experiencing hip pain, sciatica, postpartum recovery challenges, or even chronic constipation and bowel dysfunction. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, improving athletic performance, or just looking to move and feel better, Emily’s expertise can help.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can often be a hidden factor behind pain, instability, or mobility struggles that don’t seem to have a clear cause. Many people don’t realize that symptoms like urinary leakage, hip tightness, or even low back discomfort can stem from pelvic floor dysfunction. Addressing these underlying issues can lead to better movement, strength, and quality of life.

We’re always looking for ways to support our members’ health and performance optimization, and we’re excited to have another specialized practitioner in-house!

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Our pelvic floor is a group of muscles that are located deep in the bottom of the pelvis. I like to think of it as the stable floor of our trunk region, making up the bottom of our core muscles. It supports our pelvic organs and coordinates with our abdominals, diaphragm, low back muscles, and glutes to provide support to the body. It functions to start and stop peeing, pooping, and plays a crucial role in sexual function.

When the pelvic floor and all its lovely friends are functioning properly, we don’t pee when coughing or jumping, we can poop and pee without straining or pain, and good pelvic floor health can even improve our sexual experiences. It is an important group of muscles that until things go sideways, we don’t think about at all!

“I have been seeing Emily Bohan for about 18 months, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. From the moment I met Emily, I realized that she is not only highly skilled but also genuinely caring and attentive. Throughout my sessions, Emily demonstrates a deep understanding of my needs and tailors each session to target my specific concerns. As someone with joint hypermobility due to a connective tissue disorder (hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome), I greatly appreciate Emily’s genuine curiosity to learn more about these complex conditions.

Emily’s expertise was evident as she guided me through exercises and techniques that significantly improved my function and reduced my pain. The results speak for themselves—I have seen remarkable improvements in my shoulder range of motion and scapular control. I am truly grateful to Emily for her dedication and commitment to my well-being.”

Pelvic floor dysfunction is incredibly common—over 50% of recreational athletes experience urinary leakage during exercise. But just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normal! I take a holistic approach to treatment, addressing not only the area of issue but also movement patterns, strength, and lifestyle factors that contribute to pain and dysfunction. With certifications in nutrition and hormone coaching, I integrate comprehensive strategies to optimize recovery and performance.

Outside the clinic, you’ll find me snowboarding, hiking, horseback riding, and lifting weights. While I no longer compete in powerlifting, I still love to pick up heavy things!
